Our Organising Process
The Pos Lanai community, which is under the Cameron Highlands parliamentary constituency, has been a key area of work for PSM Cameron Highlands branch since its establishment by Comrade Suresh Kumar in 2014.
The first struggle with the community was against the Telom Dam construction. After a long court battle between the OA community and Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), the struggle concluded successfully in 2019 when the dam project was finally scrapped. Following this victory, the Pos Lanai community returned to their homeland and rebuilt their houses after being forcibly evicted for the dam's construction.
While the core members of the community, about 80 families, refused to be resettled and remained in Pos Lanai throughout the struggle against the Telom Dam, many others were deceived by false promises from authorities and politicians, leading them to relocate to a resettlement village named Pantos.
From the initial 80 families in Pos Lanai, the number has grown to over 100 families as more are being convinced to resume their ancestral lifestyle of sustainable farming and selling forest products.
The second struggle was against the destructive Lanthanide mining project covering 660 hectares across three sites. After fierce public objections and a petition, the project was successfully blocked in 2021.
Now in 2024, the threat of the mining project has returned and the community is engaged in fighting against the second proposed Lanthanide mining site.
